this is my last week freelancing at the ad agency i’ve been at since may ‘08. i start a new full time job (with benefits!) on monday. i had a seperate entry all written up but it was just a diatribe about how i was shafted in the last two years and unappreciated, so be happy i didn’t post it.
andy is selling the car today. we will be carless (except we have an i-go membership) and it frightens me. i’ve been carless in chicago, it’s stupid! always having to take public transportation. boo to that!
the holidays were nice. i dread nye.
i havent been to the gym since the day before thanksgiving and i wouldnt be surprised if i gained 10 pounds from all the delicious cookies i ate. back to healthy food today.
my birthday is in a week or so. meh.
life is boring. i don’t even know what to post on tumblr anymore.
Thought of you guys during last night’s insomniac bout. Found myself reading Deke’s Gamepro and read a really well-written review only to find your boy’s name on the byline at the end. Please pass along my compliments.
“Some students end up at second-tier schools because they’re exactly like students at Harvard or Yale, only less gifted or driven. But others end up there because they have a more independent spirit. They didn’t get straight A’s because they couldn’t be bothered to give everything in every class. They concentrated on the ones that meant the most to them or on a single strong extracurricular passion or on projects that had nothing to do with school or even with looking good on a college application. Maybe they just sat in their room, reading a lot and writing in their journal. These are the kinds of kids who are likely, once they get to college, to be more interested in the human spirit than in school spirit, and to think about leaving college bearing questions, not resumés.”—
AS PREVIOUSLY THREATENED: THE 50 MOST OVERLOOKED AND/OR UNDERCELEBRATED MOVIES OF THE DECADE
Like many of you, I love lists: Reading them, dissecting them, and, occasionally, creating them. Recently a friend of mine solicited from me and a number of his other friends a list of “ten movies you hardly ever hear about,” the better to fill out his Netflix queue, I’d imagine. I tried to trim a quick list of about twenty down to ten, but then decided to go crazy with the cheez whiz in the opposite direction.
What will follow are by no means necessarily the best films of the decade, nor are they necessarily unearthed gems. They’re just films that, for one reason or another, struck me as being quizzically dismissed or astoundingly underloved. Hopefully in the batch of 50 you’ll find a handful of minor discoveries, or maybe even give another chance to a movie that initially struck you as slight or just plain lousy.
“General opinion makes out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, I don’t see that. Seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, none of the phone calls from people on board were messages of hate or revenge, they were all messages of love. lf you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.”—Love Actually (via movieoftheday)
The last time I flew to New York I listened to this on my iPhone most of the way. The guy sitting next to me kept asking me what I was listening to and he was like, “You’re listening to the same band for two hours?” and I sort of just turned away. You can listen to Frightened Rabbit for ages. From the raw, earnest vocals to just the incredible lyrics! Oh, the lyrics. “Lift your dress enough to show me those shins, let your hair stick to your forehead” makes me blush every time. Gorgeous, passionate songs. I’m so excited for their next release.
